Reducing Food Fear
If trying a new food feels frightening, or you’ve been eating the same “safe” foods for years, you’re not alone. This often happens after following restrictive diets for IBS or other digestive conditions. Although these diets can be helpful at first, they can sometimes reinforce the brain’s expectation that certain foods are harmful. Over time, this can create a cycle where fear of symptoms becomes as much of a problem as the foods themselves, making it increasingly difficult to reintroduce foods with confidence.
Of course this isn’t about encouraging you to eat foods that are genuinely unsafe because of an allergy, coeliac disease, or another medical condition. Instead, it’s about rebuilding confidence in foods that no longer need to be avoided but still feel frightening.
Hypnotherapy works with the automatic, learned responses in the brain rather than the logical part that already knows a food is safe. In a relaxed, focused state, it can help reduce the emotional response attached to past experiences, create new, calmer associations with feared foods, and mentally rehearse eating them before trying them in real life.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques can complement this process by helping to change the language, beliefs, and mental imagery associated with food, making feared foods feel less threatening. Together, these approaches can reduce food-related anxiety and help you gradually reintroduce foods at a pace that feels manageable, giving you greater confidence and variety in your diet.
